In most parts of Japan, they have seasons, same as
we do—spring, summer, fall, and winter. In addition
to these four seasons, though, they also have tsuyu.
Tsuyu is the rainy season. It falls mostly during
June but often overlaps into the first part of July.
During tsuyu, it rains almost every day, and temperatures
are much cooler than early summer temperatures are
here. During tsuyu, you always want to carry an umbrella.
My first year in Japan, I forgot several times and
got soaked every time I forgot! All this rain is awkward
for people living in the big cities, but in rural
areas, it’s a lot of fun. The rain keeps the
forests and rice fields moist and green. Hundreds
of bright green frogs grow in the rice fields, and
beautiful white cranes and herons come to eat the
frogs and nest in the trees. Get online and see what
you can learn about Japan’s fifth season!
